ladyybirdd features original music by flutist Gina Izzo framing the acoustic instrument through washed-out reverbs, synthesizers, and FX. The flute's sound transforms to create a new musical vocabulary drawing upon ambient electronics & improvisation through analog guitar pedals. ladyybirdd creates works that thrive at the intersection of music and endless soundscapes used to amplify individuals voices through their unique stories.
ladyybirdd's debut album "today is tomorrow's yesterday" is an exploration of love, loss, and self-image - as well as a process for dismantling one's relationship with them. The album features artists including Andy Akiho, steel-pan; Ambrose Akinmusire, trumpet; Erika Dohi, keyboards; Nick Dunston, bass; Carol Féliz, spoken word; Ian David Rosenbaum, percussion; Immanuel Wilkins, saxophone. The only musical instruction given to the artists in the studio was to "stay until you lose the urge to leave."
The album will release in 2022.
Another project of ladyybirdd is in collaboration with Slam Poet Peter Komondau who is based in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their art bridges New York City and the DRC through the lens of slam poetry, electronic music, and visual installation. In 2021, they will release their debut work "je ne peux pas respirer," Komondua's poetic response to the death of Eric Garner, whose dying words became a rallying cry for protests against police brutality.
